Adventures in London: Issue 84

It has been a good week with a fine balance between work, social relationships and training. I realise that over the next couple of months, juggling these three variables is going to be more and more crucial, but I am determined to find the balance.

On Monday, Powers and I gorged down on a Pizza Hut family dinner, whilst we watched Glee. I am absolutely obsessed with this show. I am hoping the plot line gets a bit better, but coming from the girl that watches Gossip Girl, 90210 and just recently the New Melrose Place - I really don't need a good plot to follow a show :-) What this show has that the others mentioned don't is musical numbers and brilliant one-liners. If there could only be a Sue Sylvester in every show.

On Friday, a bunch of us went to Karaoke Box for Jessica's Hen Do. I was convinced to sing a couple of songs - granted they were the musical broadway numbers. Powers and I sang Alone together and decided to put the Glee spin to the number. I am not much of a karaoke fan, in fact would do everything possible to avoid singing, but that night I went for it. I blame the fancy dress them of us all going as Pop Stars for my desire to pick up the mic and sing. You know, with the right crowd and the right song - it can actually be fun. Again, I blame the Cheryl Cole outfit...I do not reckon I will be back on the karaoke stage for a long while.

On Saturday, it was off to the Monster Ball with Lady Gaga at the O2. I went into the show a bit skeptical to be honest. I did not know what to expect, but after the performances on the Grammy's and X-Factor I was certainly expecting a spectacle. I have to admit, the show was actually go. The long costume changes took away from the momentum of the show, but Lady Gaga is certainly talented that is for sure. She is a freak, but she has talent.

It has been a good week. I managed to do a couple of training sessions which are going well. I am not doing anything serious and I am struggling not to push it. I was an even better weekend spending time with the girls. The sad realisation however has been that two nights out surely does tire me. I yawning at 1130 and grey hair is an indication that I just cannot socialise like I used to. Tell you a secret? I don't miss it.

Coach Peters - HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you are having a lovely day today and celebrating with a long bike run and some ice cream. (I also hope that I got the date right and did not mess it up like I have for the past 7 years - haha)

Hope you all are well.

Miss you and love you more

Adventures in London: Issue 83

It has been a quite week. To be honest, I would rather not go into any of it. I celebrated 6 years at Mindshare on Tuesday...so that was a good day. It was then followed by events that have made me question pretty much everything I wrote last week. I still keep my faith though that there is a reason for all of this madness. Who knows, maybe I am the one who is mad.

Not only did Tuesday mark my 6 years working at Mindshare, but it was also Pancake day (aka Mardi Gras)!! You know, it may have been 18 months, but I still prefer American pancakes over English pancakes. I cannot get used to the notion of English pancakes with lemon and sugar. The day I switch over will be the day that I need to move back to the States. Pancakes are meant to be had with Maple Syrup & butter!!!

On Friday, I celebrated yet another leaving do party for a friend. Kevin and I go way back. We shared a cube together back in WorldWide plaza when we first started. Then we forced apart with the move to Seventh Ave. Over my 6 year relationship with Mindshare, Kevin has always been apart of it. A month after I told Kevin that I would be moving to London he delighted me with the news that he would be joining me as well. Now he is off to Singapore to explore a new role. Will I follow? Time will tell. I did say that I would go back to the States via Asia, but I don't know if now is the time to make that move. I have too many reasons to stay in London right now. Right now is not my time to leave....it is my time to stay and see what lies ahead.

Kevin, I wish you all the best on this next chapter, but please remember where your home is. Come back!

Well this is a short post.

Hope you all are well

xx

Adventures in London: Issue 82

This week has been a pretty low-key week. That is not to say that it has been a bad week. Actually it has probably been the most enlightening week this year (yes I realise there have only been six weeks to date).

Earlier this week we celebrated the retirement of someone who has put their heart and soul into Mindshare. On 17 February, I will celebrate 6 years at Mindshare. Fingers crossed I will be able to celebrate 10 years, 20 years and one day retire from a company that has taught me and given me so much. I know more often that not, ya'll end up hearing me complain about the long hours, the stress and idiots, but if asked I will tell you that there is no other place that I would rather be. Whilst chatting with someone in the industry, I realised that if you take a step back for the grit and grid there are so many opportunities to be had by being purple that I'd miss out on in another shop. I have had my moments - face it we all have - but I would not trade any of those bad moments cause from them I have learned so much. Not just about my career or how to do my job, but I have learned about myself, my limits, my strengths, my weaknesses, what I want and who I am.

When growing up I do not remember dreaming of my wedding, dreaming of being Uncle Scrooge and diving into a pool of gold coins (that is probably cause I reckon that would really hurt). What did I dream of? I dreamt of being happy. Sounds cheesy I know, but that is all I can ever remember wanting from my life. When I was back home in November I pulled out my 8th grade health class project. In the journal we had to write about ourselves and what we wanted to be when we grew up. What was that exactly? Well I was a person that did not like crowded places (still passionately dislike them) and I wanted to have a job in which I got to wear a suit, and have the ability to break and sit down for lunch. REALLY! I was suck a FREAK! Honestly who says that?! Apparently a 14 year old Tini does ;-) I may have been a freak (and still am), but I am also a person that has achieved what she wanted. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of items on my wishlist and I achieve those too - cause one way or another I always get what I want.

On Saturday Biju and I visited the Natural History Museum. The NHM is officially the first museum that I have visited since moving here. LIE!!! I went to the James Bond/ Ian Fleming exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in November with B Mak. The NHM is a lovely museum. I never visited the Museum of Natural History in New York (and I know I have missed out), but after this experience I am keen to not only go back to the NHM, but would like to visit the one in New York too (would also like to go the Empire State Building). I could not help but remember the visits that we used to take in grade school to the NYS Museum in Albany for the Dinosaur exhibit. I don't know why, but being in the natural history museum reminded me of Dad. I don't have many memories of him, but I do associate him with certain things; dinosaurs and space are two particular things. That and sunsets for some reason.

We did not get around to seeing the blue zone as the mammal exhibit was closed and the queue for the dinosaur exhibit was not worth it. I probably would not have minded the wait time, but the number of kids screaming was adding to my throbbing headache. We did make it, however, to the geology zone!! I am still a little kid at heart that enjoys looking at fossils, minerals and precious stones. When I go back I want to visit Lasting Impressions exhibit and of course "ooh" and "ahh" at the Earth's Treasure exhibit.

After our tour of the museum we drove over to Portobello Market for some shopping before dinner at Black and Blue. I did not need to, when do we ever need to, but I could not help but add yet another jacket to the collection. I personally think it is a beautiful jacket, Mom on the other hand thinks I look like a London Bobby in the jacket. To each their own...I am keeping cause it is red, soft and purrrtttyyy!

To celebrate our second annual Chinese New Year Dim Sum brunch at Dragon Castle on Sunday. Last year when we did this, it marked the first (and only time) that our full gang was together. We decided to try again this year and to make CNY an annual tradition. It had been a good 3 months since I had seen some of them outside of work so it was a good afternoon of food, friends, food, laughter and did I mention food!! Cannot wait to go back - I heart that place, but it is one of those place that you truly appreciate when you have a large group (and thus can order 3 of everything on the menu).

Once I recovered from my food coma, I "celebrated" Valentine's day by going to see Valentine's day. For those who have not seen it, the movie makes Love Actually look like Citizen Kane. I will not say anymore. The best line of the movie is not actually in the movie, but in the ending credits...that made it worth watching. Plus who doesn't love a good chick flick on Valentine's Day :-)

On that note, hope you all had a very happy Chinese New Year (and Valentine's Day)!

xoxo

Adventures in London: Issue 81

After the weekend in NYC, the only thing that I wanted from this week was to relax....good thing I did the OPPOSITE! rsrsrs

On Thursday I went to see Wicked with my friend Biju. I had been wanting to see the musical for years, so I am glad that I can finally cross Wicked off the list. It was nice to go to the theatre in London. Don't know how to describe it, but there is a magic that is associated with broadway and seeing shows live. It was certainly an experience watching the show hearing the English actor speak. I have nothing to gauge the performance against, but I did not feel that the accents took away from the show. It did make me wonder how Avenue Q or RENT would be in London - especially the subtle NYC comments. Anyway whether in NYC Broadway or London's West End, I would recommend the show to anyone who has not seen it. On a side note, once I am finished with "Born to Run", I think I am going to read the book and then "Son of a Witch", which I bought when it first came out not realising that it was the sequel to Wicked: The Life and Time of the Wicked Witch of the West.

On Saturday, we all celebrated Ms Diamond's birthday with drinks at Wax Jambu (now that is a name for a bar) up in Islington/Angel area. I have to say, it is always a pleasure when our group gets together. Whether you were in the mood before hand to go out or not, you can be assured that once you do you are going to have a top night of fun and laughter (and as a bonus of Saturday night there were sinfully delicious cocktails called Rasping Ruby made from fresh raspberries, creme de mure, Jameson, cranberry juice and nutmeg). I am really having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that I have been here for 18 months and we are on the second round of celebrating our birthdays on this side of the pond. I remember last year when we were all celebrating our first TG, our first Easter, first 4th of July....we all acted as one another's family abroad and now we've actually become a family here (may it be dysfunctional, we are a family nonetheless).

As mentioned before, despite being EST+5hours, we were still gathering to watch the game. I was shocked by the amount of people in the grocery store that were shopping for Superbowl parties. I could not helped it so I asked to confirm. The superbowl is the one American sport that actually gets press in the UK. What I do not understand is why. The time of the game is horrible, the experience is lost without the ad breaks, and majority of the people here do not understand the rules. Who knows, maybe one day Americans will gather to watch the Ashes :-)

After lunch at Bodean's with SS and his girls, it was time to start preparing and cooking. The superbowl menu this year themed specially for the Saints:
  • Steak bites with a bloody mary dipping sauce
  • Bacon Dip in a bread bowl (recipe courtesy of Big E)
  • Homemade salsa and chips
  • Jambalya & Corn Bread (glad I remembered to go shopping whilst in NYC)
  • Cheese board
  • Carrot Cake (courtesy of LL)
  • Artichoke dip & Cup Cakes (courtesy of the Diamonds)
It did not feel quite like Superbowl as I did not make my chicken fingers (was about to, but realised that I already had WAY too much food for the evening). Guess it did not help that the party ended 30 minutes before kick-off. Such is life when the tubes close at 11:40p and I did not have enough room for the whole gang to sleep over.

I did manage to watch some of the game, tried to teach Biju the rules of American football but lost that battle as they fell asleep shortly after kickoff. I did not last much longer though; I think I officially feel asleep around or after half time (2-ish). It was really hard to get into the game with the UK commentary. It may have been okay for Wicked, but I could not stand the English commentary on the game especially when it was apparent that they did not know the rules or players. That said, I cannot imagine American commentary on Cricket or Football (soccer) being any better.

So just like every girl's dream, the Saints finally got their ring!!! Brilliant job and well played game (apologies for falling asleep, but I did catch up the next day).

Well I am off to bed - can barely keep my eyes open right now

xx
