Adventures in London: Issues 110-119

When you've hit bottom, there is no other way but up. I have done a bit of travelling this past couple of weeks which have given me a great deal of perspective and outlook on situations. I have discovered a number of things about myself, the way I engage with people and how I allow situations to define or impact me. Things happen for a reason. Just having a little faith and belief can take you a long way.

It has been a beautiful series of weeks allowing me to cherish in two dear couples getting married. May it be that they were on separate sides of the pond, but it was a honour sharing their special days with them. Life will always give you things to think about, complain and be frustrated about. You can focus on those moments, or you can enjoy the passing of time and smile.

The song for this recap is a rather fitting one. It is 'Secret of Life' by Lynda Carter. That evening left me speechless and will be one that I will cherish as it was the day I got to spend some time with Dad. Hope you enjoy the recap and song!

Adventures in London: Issue 119

When I first mentioned to my Aunt that I was moving to London, her response was, "Home will be 7 hrs in either direction." You cannot get any more truth than that statement. Obviously home will always be 12309, but there is a part of me that feels quite at home at 400 020. Only my parents are from here, but growing up I have always referred to visiting India as visiting home. (I know I am a strange ticket....but if you are just coming to that realisation I must say... You are slow). I have been wanting to make a visit to Mumbai for some time now, so I am glad that things worked out and I was able to spend my two week sabbatical with my family. I am going to do a bit of travelling on this visit; not around India, but will take some time to fly to Malaysia to visit with Aashin and Stuty.

There is no need to go through the beginning of this week, as all it involved was counting the sleeps until Mumbai. Granted going away for 2 weeks means that you need to squeeze in 3 weeks of work into one, but what can do you. It has to be done. I am determined NOT to think about work for a second whilst I am here. I just want to shut off and enjoy my visit. Let's see if I can actually do this, as I have already worked a bit this weekend wrapping up some things that I did not get to before leaving. Sometimes you just have to draw a line in the sand....and this is my line. Holidays are meant for you to take a break, relax and alone your body to recover. After every run that one goes on, you allow for recovery time....that is what holidays are to work what recovery days are to long-runs.

I took the red-eye flight from London on Friday night therefore arriving Saturday afternoon. Saturday was spent primarily settling inn and adjusting to the new environment. Mumbai has changed so much in the past 4 years. Each visit, I am impressed by the city's efforts to clean up the streets and infrastructure. The noise of the rickshaws and taxis did bring a smile to my face though. There is just something about the sounds and rhythm of Mumbai that I enjoy. Wouldn't like it anywhere else, but it belongs here. I was rather shocked by how much I remember of Mumbai from my past couple of visits. I even remembered things from when I visited in 1990...shocking that was 20 years ago and yet I remember it. There are some moments the heart never forgets.

My uncle recently moved from Andheri to Church Gate in SoBo (South Bombay). Don't know what that means...look it up. This blog entry is not going to provide any background or educational facts. I am holiday after all ;-) The new flat is lovely. It is everything my Aunt & Uncle are; peaceful, crisp, welcoming and warm. They are quite close to Marine drive so I am keen to go out for a run..will keep you posted on that front. Fingers crossed, I will be hit my goal and will be able to start running again. In the evening we went to Breach Candy Club for some beers and tandoori. Oh how I am going to enjoy eating here. I think my goal will be accomplished in no time :-)

On Sunday evening, we went to Koklia Masi's (my Mom's Aunt's apartment) in Walkeshwar (the view from her bed room is the first snap - - now that is a way to wake up). It was not a long visit, but it was nice to visit with Koklia Masi as she is the eldest of the family. What a women she is?! You want to know what strength and elegance is this is a lady to meet. I realised that I did not take a family snap whilst there. Don't know what I was thinking...clearly was to engrossed in conversation to capture the moment. It happens, what can I say...contrary to popular belief my camera is not glued to my hands 24/7...I do sometimes enjoy the moment :-)

After our visit, we went to Trishna for dinner. This is not a restaurant that you come to for the surrounding, decor or ambiance...there is only one reason to come to this top restaurant - FOOD. Well know for its food, this restaurants dines the who's who of India (including Cricket captain Gary Kirsten who sat a few tables away from us). One would have thought that I had never seen before as I thorough enjoyed and was not the least bit shy about eating the garlic clams, tandoori baby shark, butter garlic crab, and garlic chili lobster. Oh this is how seafood is meant to be enjoyed. What flavours!! I am happy to report that they have opened a Trishna in London!!! Not quite the same menu, but be certain I am checking this place out!!!

On that heavenly note, I am off. Hope you all are smiling and eating like there is no tomorrow.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Adventures in London: Issue 118

It is a tough life I have been living lately...been away from the flat for the four weekends; travelling from Munich, NYC, Baltimore, Chesterfield. I know you all feel really bad for me now. This week way about relaxing and preparing for my next round of travels. Where am I going this time? I am off to India-Malaysia. I have had the pleasure of working for Mindshare for over 5 years now (going on 7 years now) and as a thank -you, I am entitled to a 2 week sabbatical. I had been debating on where to spend those two weeks, but when my cousin said he was moving to Malaysia in October the idea of Diwali in Malaysia was just too tempting not to see through. So to answer the question of why India-Malaysia? India is where my family is and I have been wanting to visit ever since Dec last year and well you know why Malaysia.

There really isn't much to share regarding this week. Back in March (Issue 86) I mentioned that we were growing chilis in the office as a means to raise money for charity. This week we got to deliver on the fruits of labour. A few of us on the team took orders for various chili products - chili chocolate biscuits, coriander chili jam and fresh tomato salsa. I started making fresh chili last year when we grew chilies within the team, but this time it was for people outside of the immediate team - YIKES! Wednesday night I made 5 batches of fresh salsa and bottled them up. Not to sound dorky, but it was fun cooking for a good cause. Granted we did not raise a lot of money with our culinary skills, but we created buzz around the office. Will say, the chili chocolate biscuits were by far the top!! Truly worth a try ;-)

Actually on that note, I think I am going to bid you adieu. It has been a rather chill random week if I am being honest. Was not in the mood to do much and really just wanted to relax after the last couple of weekends I had been having. Sometimes, a weekend in watching TV box-sets is just what the body wants. If the body is asking, I have learnt now to listen :-)

I highly recommend Dexter, if you have not seen it, it is definitely worth buying the box-sets.

Adventures in London: Issue 117

Four weeks ago we celebrated Big E's hen weekend in Munich with an Octoberfest celebration fit for queens. It is only natural that after the hen weekend, that the hen get married and that is exactly what she did. Originally from Nebraska, Big E opted for a CoE (Church of England) wedding up in Chesterfield where he fiance was from. For the rest of us that meant a beautiful weekend away and a wedding in which we all could attend!!

Chesterfield is in the east midlands part of Derbyshire. Where exactly does that mean? Well it is north of London - - about a 3 hour train ride from St Pancreas station. It is a small market town dating back to 1204 with a population just over 100K.

I had no idea what to expect from Chesterfield, had heard bits and bobs from Big E and Web, but never really put much thought into what to do in Chesterfield. I wish I had. It is a beautiful little English town filled with pre-war architecture, open markets and greenery as far as the eye can see. This weekend did not lend much for site-seeing, but I would keen to travel up again to tour around the town a bit more. I did accidentally happened to stop in the largest Tesco in England to grab a last minute wedding card! Had I know I would have taken a snap for you all :-)

Chesterfield is most known for the 'crooked' spire of the Church of Saint Mary & All Saints. The spire is twisted 45 degrees and leans 9'6" from the center. There is no known reason why this is the case - - maybe it was the lack of a craftsman in the day, maybe it is the work of Superman. Whatever the case may be, this little twist truly makes the church a thing of beauty not only from the inside, but from the outside as well. It was my first time inside a CoE church. I don't know why, but there is something about churches that I love -- could be the detailed marble or granite carvings or the stain glass windows. I just love the detail and the artwork (though I don't think it meant to be considered artwork per-say).

For most of us, this wedding marked our first English wedding. Granted there were no big hats, but there were a few in the crowd. Don't really know what the hat thing is about, but when I do, I will let you know.

The wedding what in the mid-afternoon. Following the ceremony and covering of the new couple with confetti it was back to the hotel for champagne hour (or hours as it was). This was then followed by some photos and then the wedding dinner started. I say dinner, but it was more a buffet encompassing a craving station with three meats, potatoes (roasted and rosemary), veggies, Yorkshire pudding, sauces, etc. It was like Thanksgiving dinner, but at a wedding. What more could you want - - well maybe a dress that was a tad bit looser ;-)

It was a wonderful day witnessing our dear Big E marry a man that she loves. It was nice to have the 'family' together to share their special day with the happy couple. Just thinking back to Saturday night brings a smile to my face. It was pure and joyful fun. We all truly enjoyed ourselves, dancing, laughing and celebrating the moment. How often do you get to do that?! When you work as hard as we do, all have your own life to live, the moments that we have together are the ones worth cherishing. We are all entering new eras of our lives, so it is important that we enjoy the moments that we have together cause you never know where life is going to take us next.

To the Webs, congratulations! The love you share is truly one that was written in the stars (believe this even more so after hearing about how you two met). I wish you all the best and many happy returns. Together you will be the Webs, but she will always be our Big E!

To everyone else, I hope you are well and smiling. Life is too short not too!

Adventures in London: Issue 116

This is going to be a packed post, so better get it started!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!!

I had the lovely joy of spending Mom's birthday just us ladies. I had a list of places in mind of where I wanted to take her, but the London weather followed to NYC so walking in the rain was not what Mom wanted to do on her big day. Instead, we walked down to Curry Hill for dosas and idle. That is another guilty pleasure food that I miss. I have learnt to make most of my Indian favourites, but the one dish I cannot cook is idle and dosas (yet). I don't know how Mom felt about the day, but I was pleased to have had the opportunity to spend some mother/daughter time with Mom. The fact that it was her birthday, made it even more special. The fact that she not only accepted, but opened and used her birthday presents meant the world to me. We are all turning over new leaves. It is never to late to live.

The one thing that I have thoroughly loved about this visit has been spending time with Kadin. He is such a little man trapped in the body of a (soon to be) 3 year old. He is a true joy to spend time with. I look forward to my visits home, cause I know they will entail some alone Kadin-Tini Foi time. These are the moments worth holding onto. They are the moments where we bond, where he shares stories with me (and boy does he have stories to share), and where we develop another 'Kadin-Tini' thang. I am looking forward to moving back to NYC and being able to see him more than just every couple of months. Until that day comes, I will have to settle for our Skype dates. Unfortunately those have been less frequent too given my travelling schedule.

This visit has been about spending some quality time with family. I never have enough time to balance seeing both friends and family so this time I focused on my family, making sure that I had some quality time with everyone. On Tuesday night, Bams and I went out for a good ole fashion happy hour. It had been ages since we had done one together, so it was time to relive the days of 2000 when Bams and I toured the bars of Third ave. We contemplated going to our old stop and ground, but given that we are not 22 anymore we opted to try a new place and went to Cask, a cute little beer joint around the corner. If you are in the area, I high recommend checking the place out. I would recommend NOT trying their bloody orange jalapeno margarita. May have worked in Austin, but not here. Their beer selection on the other hand is top notch. How I miss beer flights in the US of A.

After happy hour, it was off to meet up with some friends for dinner. Now I know what you are guessing. We went to Rio Grande...WRONG! Yup, went for a new place and went for Sushi at my local. So not far from the usual, but the last time I ate sushi there was 2 days before the red sox won their second world series.

I was not in the mood for a big do-up so I am pleased that it was just a small group of my closest. For the first time, we just lived in the moment. It was not about, "oh what have you been up to" or "what is new since we last saw each other". It was about living the moment like we used to. We topped the night with a night cap at The Wharf. Funny that even after all these years and months, they still remember and welcome me with open arms. How I miss nights like Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Mom took her two babies (Kadin and I) to go see the Lion King. I had the desire to take Mom to the Lion King whilst she was here in London, but she had made a promise to Kadin and was keen to keep it.

Kadin was well aware of the fact that we were going to the show Wednesday evening. He could not stop talking about it all day and kept singing the soundtrack. How does he remember everything? Ask him what airline he flew to Hawaii and which to Disney World and he will tell you. Ask him to sing and dance to the latest Usher song and he will show you. He has a memory of an elephant. Want to do a brand awareness study on toddlers, this is your kid.

Back to the show. I had no idea what to expect, but Kadin was quick to fill me in. We sat near the isles and he nicely pointed out, Tini Foi, the animals will come and pass us. I had no idea what he was talking about, but as soon as the show started I understood. If you have not seen the show, I highly recommend it. The sets, the costume and the choreography are out of this world. It doesn't matter how many times, you've seen the Disney cartoon version, this is worth seeing.

In efforts to try something new as a family, on Thursday we took a trip to Randall's island for a children's fall fair day at the golf course. It was a celebration of autumn, to up and coming Halloween holiday and it was all outdoors in the fresh crisp NY weather. If you didn't know better, you would have thought you were in the country-side, but the pony rides in the parking lot soon reminded you that you were still in the city.

For me it was a grand day in the sunshine, watching (and of course photographing) Kadin play mini-golf, running around and jumping off hay-stacks. If they only had cider donuts and warm apple cider it would have made for the ideal autumn day. If it was a focastle farms in 1988, then it would have been heaven.

That evening, Jamila, Bhai and I went to go see the So You Think You Can Dance tour at Radio City Music Hall. Yes you are reading right, Bhai went. In fact he was rather chuffed to be going as he missed the prior 3 tours. In fact (and he is going to kill me for sharing), but I started watching SYTYCD because of Bhai. True fact! He watched season 1 and kept talking about the talent on the show that when they aired the second season, I was keen to tune in. I am glad that I did. I loved SYTYCD. Some of the dances and dancers on that show are out of this world. They are rather touching really. I have missed out on the last couple of seasons, but try to follow on YouTube (not the same, but what can you do). It was a great night watching a show with Bams and Bhai. The last time we all went to a show together it was Nelly Furtado and not as entertaining.

Not quite ready to leave and wanting to spend just a little longer in NYC, on Friday morning before heading to the airport I met up with Bhai for a tea and chat in Bryant Park. We shared a really nice conversation together. It had been a while since he and I just chatted, so I am pleased that we had the opportunity for some one-on-one brother-sister time. It was a great way to spend my last hour in NYC, before racing to the airport only to discover my flight was going to be 2 hours delayed. Would have been nice if they posted that on the flight status BEFORE I left Kadin and family.

I spent Friday night resting in the hotel room. I should have been more social, but I just wanted to spend the night in curled up in bed and catching up on American tele. The next day I met up with Si and Bren who flew from London as well for some site seeing and touristing of Baltimore. We started with breakfast at Blue Moon (or was it Paper Moon...think it was Blue Moon) cafe in Fells Point. You forget the portion sizes of the states. I ordered the small stack of the pumpkin spice pancakes (you know I had to once they said it was on the menu), but they were way too massive to finish. I was sad not to take a take-a-way box of them. The reason I did not, was because we had plans to go for crabs for lunch. I did not want to risk not being able to finish steamed crabs in old bay.

After walking around Baltimore (stopping in Fells Point and the Inner Harbor), we headed to Costa Inn for steamed crabs. We started with a round of raw oysters and clams. I don't know why, but for some reason, the thought of raw clams bothers me. Fried, steamed clams I am fine, but not raw. Raw oysters on the other hand...those I cannot get enough of. After our starters the lady dropped on our table 12 large steamed crabs in old bay. I had no idea what to do with them, but thanks to Si for a demo, we quickly learned. Normally I do not enjoy eating with my hands (will only eat wings with two fingers), but I happily got my hands dirty with the steams crabs.

So you are probably wondering why I was in Baltimore. Our friends from London were getting married so a few of us flew over for the special occasion. It was a beautiful and intimate gathering of family and friends. It is funny, Nat is one of my best friends here in the UK. I started the day (bright at 0800) with a knock from her at the door to catch up before the wedding. She and Adam are my family here in the UK. All of us here are family, but this wedding reminded me that we all have another life in the US of A. There is this whole history behind all of us that we don't know about, we did not grow up knowing one another, we did not go to school, college, grad schools together. We lived together now, but we all carry this rich and beautiful past with
us. I am honored and blessed that I was able to be apart of Nat & Adam's special day.

On Sunday, I met up for brunch with Stan and her man (see what I did there)?!?! It was not a planned visit, but it dawned on me when I landed in BWI. Baltimore is close to Washington DC and a cab ride from Dulles is Reston, VA. So if you could drive from Dulles to Baltimore, then Reston must be in proximity right? Not really a hop skip jump away, but Stan and John drove up for the afternoon. I am really pleased that I was able to catch up with them. Stan pointed out that it had been over a year since we last saw each other in Hamburg...can hardily believe time is flying by so quickly. We went to this cute tea brunch place in Fells point and then walked around. There was an antique market in the center so we walked around. I was tempted to buy a number of things, but had to refrain. I do wish however, that I purchased that 1930s Bulova watch. What a beauty it was.

It has been a lovely week, starting in New York City and finishing in Baltimore. I have a soft spot for Baltimore. Not only is the home of the Orioles and Cal Ripken Jr, but Baltimore is the city where I ran my first half marathon back in 2003. I will always remember training and running that race.

To everyone to made this a special week, thank you. Thank you for the laughter, the moments I will cherish and the memories I will hold dear and near to my heart!

xoxo

Adventures in London: Issue 115

SINCERE apologies!!! In my Munich bliss, I forgot to check the calendar for what happened Monday - Thursday. Sincere apologies, as on Tuesday marked the coolest lunch ever!! As the picture alludes to, I had lunch with Big Ben. Okay, not exactly, but I did go to the House of Parliament for lunch with a friend who is the head of media for the Scottish Parliament. It was such a cool lunch. Before our lunch reservations, he took me for a tour of parliament, it was a 'pitch-yourself' moment going through the House of Lords, House of Commons, and seeing the oldest part of Parliament (dating back to 1030) where William Wallace was 'tried' and where the Pope greeted people during his visit to England. Apologies, for leaving this out of last weeks post! Was an oversight.

The week started out recovering from the big weekend in Munich. I love my adventures and spending time with friends, but crikey....life after thirty certainly does slow down. In a good way though. There are some things of my twenties, that I don't miss. Now is the time to view the world with a new perspective and sense of adventure.

On Thursday, I spent the evening catching up with Pat. Being the smart person that I am, a double booked myself, but thankfully it was with two charming and understanding gentlemen so they understood. In fact, we all met up together and had an even better evening. Thank you Pat and Darshan for a lovely evening. I am glad that you two got to hang out again and many thanks for bringing your better halves. It was just the evening that I needed.

On Saturday, the running club celebrated its 15 year anniversary. It is strange when you think about running world 15 years ago. In 1995 most people did not run with music, if they did it was with a Walkman or Discman. It was a world before Garmins, iPods, heart monitor watches, and dry fit clothing. 15 years ago, I was just starting out to run, in those days I couldn't make it through a 5mile run without stopping. I ran with a team. Well not much has changed in 15 years..I am back to being unable to run 5 miles without stopping and I am back to running with a team. Well maybe not recently, since I have put myself on the 'do-not-run' list, but you get the point. My friend Lou and I went to the gala and had the time our our life eating, dancing and meeting new running friends. I came to realise that proper dress on this side of the pond means ladies in dress, guys in suits, tuxedos AND KILTS!! It was amasing to see the number of guys in traditional kilts. You just don't see that in the States :-)

After a couple of hours of sleep, it was off to NYC for a visit before the Diamond-Gerhart wedding. This year I am sadly going to miss both Kadin's birthday party and the NYC ING Marathon. Will be a first for both. I am gutted to say the least. I look forward to photographing both of these occasions, but circumstances and timings did not make sense for me to make a trip to NYC at the end of October so I (and you) will have to miss out :-( I know you look forward to the pictures of Kadin on his birthday, but you will have to settle for how he looks 3 weeks prior). What I can offer you instead is pictures of Mom on her birthday. Even trade right?!?! (no, but they are roughly the same height so close enough).

I was rather shattered from the flight over (and thanks to turbulence again, I did not sleep much), so after a brief nap it was off for an early dinner at Dock's to celebrate Mom's birthday. Normally figuring out how old someone is should be rather straightforward. With Mom, it is anything but. Try sorting this out...she 63 complete and is 64 running. Well whatever age she is, we all celebrated with a delicious seafood dinner. For Bhai and I it meant a clam bake with lobster - - that is how seafood is meant to be served. Warm with melted butter. Hear that UK?!? You can learn a thing or two about serving seafood. I digress. It was a lovely dinner with the family. I am happy that I was able to have dinner with Mom on her birthday (technically it was already the 4th in the UK). Last time I celebrated with her was 3 years ago whilst driving to Ithaca, NY from NYC for my sister and best-friends wedding. Irony, I will be wearing the same dress for the upcoming wedding. Shhh, don't tell anyone.

Hope you all are well

xoxo
